End-User Programmable Agents
Department of Computer Science
Alexander Repenning photo

Agents hold a great promise as means for people to deal with the ever increasing information flood. Yet the present claims of truly intelligent agents seem exaggerated at best. A different route is suggested in which societies of quite dumb agents become useful information processors through end-user programming. A tremendous challenge with this approach is to devise new programming approaches that are geared towards computer users who typically have no time and interest in traditional programming or are simply overwhelmed with the very idea of programming. The system presented, called Agentsheets, is an agent-based spreadsheet enabling a wide range of end users, ranging from kids to professionals, to create their own SimCity™-like interactive simulations, infobots, and games. AgentSheets agents function as computational glue between diverse information types including web pages, sound, musical instruments (MIDI), and speech. This presentation will focus on a number of end-user programming HCI issues and will report on several years of experience with hundreds of projects created by users including elementary school kids and NASA scientists.

Refreshments will be served immediately before the talk at 3:30pm.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
