Modeling Urban Built-Up Areas in 3D

The development of 3-dimensional models of urban areas is of interest to satisfy the desire of planning changes intelligently, of training people to cope with surprises, and of enjoying urban spaces without actually being in them. The extraction of buildings from digital images has become a challenge for the field of image analysis, as documented in DARPA's Image Understanding program, and as evidenced from the sticker shock of telecommunications firms when they hear about the cost of 3D urban data for their cellular and LMDS planning work. Manual, semi-automated and automated techniques are being proposed to acquire such data efficiently. Both single images as well as stereo image pairs are being used as source materials from which to extract desired building data. Such images may be optical, but recently declassified technology shows that also radar images are useful sources for urban site models.

A rich collection of applied research efforts exists from which to draw for a report about this field. The talk will survey this research, which has a component of data creation as well as of data visualization. Of particular interest are efforts to reduce data cost by automation, and so-called "photo-realistic" visualization. The topic of this talk intersects activities at the speaker's academic home institution in Austria and at the company in Boulder where he is currently working.
