Colloquium - Reeker

ECCR 265

NSF Artificial Intelligence Research Support in an Era of Applied AI
Larry Reeker
National Science Foundation

We are entering what can be described as "The Era of Applied AI". One can quibble over whether we are really ready to call it that, or whether we have already entered it; but the fact remains that Artificial Intelligence research has come to a point where it can produce tools to handle problems that are important and cost/effective enough that humans will pay for their development and deployment.

The National Science Foundation has a long history of supporting fundamental artificial intelligence research. Its support was overshadowed by that of richer funding agencies at one time, but it has continued for many years now to support research in the spectrum of subjects that most people call AI: automated reasoning, learning, planning and scheduling, and decision making; natural language processing; development of robotic and software agents; intelligent processing of data and data mining; knowledge representation and transformation.

This talk will talk about recent funding of the field and how it may evolve as The Era of Applied AI progresses.

Refreshments will be served immediately before the talk at 3:30pm.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
