Environmental Decision Support Systems: Software Engineering in a Multi-disciplinary Setting
Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems - CADSWES

Environmental Decision Support Systems (DSS) are software applications which integrate the representation of state data (data representation), system dynamics (process models), and plan evaluation tools. These systems are used increasingly by organizations charged with the management of environmental resources such as river systems, air sheds, forests or groundwater aquifer.

The design, development and implementation of these systems require a very multi-disciplinary approach. As such, software engineering must take place within a complex environment of physical, organizational, political and economic constraints and opportunities.

At CU's Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES), computer scientists work with water resources and air quality engineers, geographers, policy scientists, and others to achieve such integration for sponsors such as the United States Bureau of Reclamation, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Electric Power Research institute, or the State of Colorado.

In this talk, we'll provide an overview of the field of Environmental DSS, its relevance for environmental management, and the role, challenges, frustrations and achievements of computer scientists in the design, development and implementation of these systems.

Refreshments will be served immediately before the talk at 3:30pm.
Hosted by Clayton Lewis.

The Department holds colloquia throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. These colloquia, open to the public, are typically held on Thursday afternoons, but sometimes occur at other times as well. If you would like to receive email notification of upcoming colloquia, subscribe to our Colloquia Mailing List. If you would like to schedule a colloquium, see Colloquium Scheduling.

Sign language interpreters are available upon request. Please contact Stephanie Morris at least five days prior to the colloquium.
