NOAA would like a list of those attending beforehand. **** Meet at 3:00pm at the couches in the CS department (1st floor) if you'd like to carpool. Directions are below. 10/29/2002 3:30pm-4:30pm NOAA Alexander MacDonald (Director, NOAA Forecast Systems Lab) Tour of the Forecast Systems Laboratory Dr. MacDonald will give a tour of the Forecast Systems Lab. The Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL), located in Boulder, Colorado, is one of the Research Laboratories in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). FSL conducts applied meteorological research and development to improve and create short-term warning and weather forecast systems, models, and observing technology. The tour will include demonstrations of their latest forecast systems, Jet, the 768 node High Performance Computing System, and Science on a Sphere. "Science on a Sphere", an educational outreach tool, is a projected image of the rotating earth onto a large sphere with topographic information overlain on the landmasses; current weather information is displayed showing the effects of mountains and oceans. FSL is located in the David Skaggs Research Center on the NOAA/NIST campus at 325 Broadway. A valid picture ID is required for admittance onto the campus and into the NOAA building. Bring your CU ID (Buff One Card), driver's license or passport - your Buff One card will probably suffice, but bring your driver's license if you have one just in case. NOAA is just down the road from campus: >From school, go south on Broadway, past Baseline Rd., and turn right into the campus at the Broadway/27th Street intersection. You'll see flags and the NIST building where you turn into the campus. Follow the road to the right and show your ID to the guard at the guard station, and tell him you are here for the CU CS Department NOAA/FSL tour by Alexander MacDonald. Continue on and follow the main road all the way around the complex. When the road ends, turn left into the parking lot of the David Skaggs building. Steps from the lot lead you down to the main entrance. Use your ID to get a visitor's pass from the guard at the front desk inside, and wait there with the other students for the tour to begin. It is also very easy to ride your bike from campus (5-7min). Ride south down Broadway, past the main flags/NIST entrance, and turn right into the campus at the David Skaggs Research Center sign. This road is closed to cars. Bike straight up this road and the Skaggs building is the only building on your left. Bike racks are all around the building. The main entrance faces the Flatirons. _______________________________________________ Phd-list mailing list Phd-list@cs.colorado.edu http://www.cs.colorado.edu/mailman/listinfo/phd-list ----- End forwarded message -----
